Corazon Aquino
Led Her Country from Dictatorship to Democracy
1933-2009
I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.
Succeeding her assassinated husband as president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992, Corazon Aquino reestablished democratic instititions and achieved social and economic reforms, turning over a well-run nation to her successor. Time Magazine named her 1986 Woman of the Year, and she was awarded the Fulbright Prize for International Understanding in 1996.
